In this study that analyzed vitamin D levels of prospective NFL draft candidates at the Scouting Combine, 59% of incoming NFL prospects had inadequate serum vitamin D levels. Athletes with low vitamin D were significantly more likely to have a history of lower extremity muscle strains (hamstring, quadriceps, calf) and core muscle injuries. Of the players who missed at least one full game during their college career due to a muscle strain, 86% were vitamin D inadequate.

Sports Health Benefits of Vitamin D
Sports Health
This review article found a strong correlation between vitamin D sufficiency and optimal muscle function. They found that increasing levels of vitamin D reduced inflammation, pain, and myopathy while increasing muscle protein synthesis, ATP concentration, strength, jump height, jump velocity, jump power, exercise capacity, and physical performance.
